Support North Texas Social Enterprises

Updated: May 8, 2020

By: Hannah Rabalais, Program Officer

A lot is uncertain during this time and we know it can be overwhelming to figure out where you can help. The Kleinert Foundation has created this list of social enterprises that support or employ the most vulnerable in our community. If you have the means, please consider buying products or gift cards from these organizations.

*Our list is as complete to the best of our knowledge and apologize in advance to those we missed. Please email Hannah Rabalais at to let us know if you have any additional opportunities!

1. Marie Mae Co.

Our online shop is still open for business: Our small, but mighty team is continuing to work on shipping your orders and has the resources and tools they need to do their jobs remotely. We are hustling from home, and we are here to support you with the best-in-class service you’ve come to expect.

Health comes first: We have contacted each of our production vendors, and as of now, everyone is still open for production with no foreseeable supply chain issues. They are staggering shifts, encouraging everyone to wash their hands, socially distancing, and following best practices to protect the health and wellbeing of themselves, their family, and our community at large. If this changes, we will let you know.

Taking care of one another: As a small business owner, quite frankly the current global climate is terrifying. But we will all get through this together, and hopefully all come out stronger on the other side of this. We know that corporate gifting may not be at the top of your list during these challenging times. But if you would like to send gifts of gratitude to your clients or comforting gifts to your now remote employees, I would humbly ask for you to support our team, our company, and our vendors with an order.

2. The Worthy Co.

It is our mission to provide dignified and sustainable employment to women survivors of sexual exploitation. That means we will continue to pay the women we employ even though they are not currently able to work. As many of you may know, hourly workers often have little to no margin for shifts in their pay and it would be a huge detriment to our women to withhold wages at this time.

With that being said, we ask that you would continue to support us when or how you are able. Whether you place an order through our online store or share our business with friends so they can shop, your support means more than you know during such an unknown time. The Net is closely and prayerfully monitoring the situation and will decide if we need to remain closed for additional time, pending changing circumstances.

3. Abi Ferrin

Each purchase at Abi Ferrin supports women employed through Love & Freedom- a nonprofit committed to eliminating recidivism and re-igniting purpose for formerly trafficked and abused women.

9. Howdy Homemade Ice cream

My name is Hannah, and I work at Howdy Homemade,  an ice cream shop in Dallas that employs people with special needs. Howdy's founder and my boss, Tom Landis found his calling and started Howdy in order to provide meaningful jobs for people with special needs. About eight months ago, Tom gave me my first job at Howdy, and it's meant a great deal to me. Now, because of the coronavirus, Tom has been forced to close entirely for a while due to lack of business. The funds raised by this campaign will be used to replace lost income for the  Howdy employees who are out of work while the store is closed, as well as for electricity and rent for the shop while it's closed.  As a proud Howdy employee, your support will mean a lot to me (though I won't be taking any of the money myself), as well as to Tom and his other employees who are currently unable to work. I truly appreciate any donation, no matter the size. Additionally, as a thank-you , Howdy will give you a free pint of ice cream for each $25 donated!!
